COBALT’s first aircraft blessing and inauguration ceremony was held yesterday, Monday the 30th of May, at Larnaca International Airport, marking the renaissance of the Cypriot aviation industry.
The ceremony took place two weeks after the Department of Civil Aviation issued COBALT’s Air Operator Certificate, in the presence of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Mr. Marios Demetriades, and his Beatitude the Archbishop of Nova Justiniana and All Cyprus Chrysostomos II. A reception then followed the ceremony for a selected group of guests, including key people from Cyprus’ political, business and media circles.
The blessing and inauguration ceremony was held two days before COBALT’s first scheduled flight from Larnaca to Athens and will mark the airline’s official launch of operations.
Flights to the United Kingdom and other European destinations are planned to start later on in the month of June. By the end of June, COBALT plans to add three more aircraft to its fleet, raising the total number to four Airbus A320 and A321.
COBALT is planning on building and expanding its network with more aircraft added to its fleet later this year and through 2017. Based on the company’s plans, by July COBALT will be flying to Athens, Thessaloniki, Heraklion, Chania, London, Manchester, Dublin, Paris, with more destinations to follow soon.
COBALT’s Chairman, Mr. Gregory Diacou, stated that the airline’s vision is to further build on the country’s long and proud aviation tradition, by not only filling the operational gap left by Cyprus Airways, but also by contributing to the broader development of the country’s economy and tourism sector.
As pointed out by Mr. Andrew Pyne, CEO of COBALT: “We – COBALT – are focused on developing our home base at Larnaca as a key regional hub, focusing on transfer traffic as well as promoting Cyprus as a destination.’ He added: ‘we have all witnessed the surge in economic and business activity that has coalesced around other successful hubs. The benefits from developing Larnaca as a true regional hub will flow to every city, town and village across this island. This is why today, as well as holding great spiritual and social significance, also marks a important milestone in Cyprus’s economic renaissance.”
COBALT is a new low cost carrier designed to be different, modern and innovative with a stated mission to enhance the image of Cyprus as an all-year-round destination and to create a strategic air travel hub at Larnaca airport.
